Reason for expectations: Another year, another set of movies and another set of expectations: 2012 has dawned and Nanban is ready to release. One of the year’s most expected movies – well, the year has just begun so that statement doesn’t hold much water, does it? – Nanban is the official remake of the Bollywood blockbuster Three Idiots, which was in turn adapted from the bestselling book Five Point Someone.

Legend goes that the idea of remaking Three Idiots sprang to Shankar when he was taking a break during the Endhiran shoot schedule. Shankar happened to watch Three Idiots – pretty late we think – and immediately fell in love with it, deciding to embark on the remake of the movie. After much deliberations and casting rumors, Vijay, Jiiva and Srikanth were finalized for the movie. No prices for guessing who’s reprising whose role from the original: Vijay is playing Aamir Khan’s role, Jiiva Sharman Joshi’s and Srikanth is obviously reprising the role of the stocky Frahan Qureshi played by Maddy.

Huge expectations are riding for the movie and the first looks provide a promising buddy comedy in Tamil after a long time. Other than the fact (or lament?) that Vijay is still playing a college-going kid, Nanban’s casting seems perfect. Ileana is making one of her rare Tamil movie appearances after her average grosser Kedi, which again brought brownie points only for Tamannah.

Nanban’s soundtrack, released on a couple of days before Christmas in Coimbatore, has received generally favorable reviews. The airwaves in Chennai are being treated to the repeat reruns of the songs tuned by Harris Jeyaraj. Nanban’s star cast also includes Sathyan, Sathyaraj, S J Surya in guest appearance, Anuya, Raghava Lawrence, Manobala and Uma Padmanabhan.

Level of expectations: 85%

Genere:  Drama

Audiences: Other than Vijay fans, the movie, if proved to be an entertainer buddy comedy it is promising to be, will have fans from all walks of the movie going public.
