Madras TalkiesReason for expectations: Raavan was three years away and though barring Aishwarya Rai and the spectacular performance of Vikram, the movie went down as a cold turkey, we will never give up on Mani Ratnam. Kadal, touted as a romantic thriller, is Mani's next and has nothing less of an ensemble star cast of debut actors and established names. Kadal will be the launch pad of Karthik's son Gautham Karthik and Radha's second daughter Thulasi Nair. Gautham is in his early twenties and Thulasi is still in her teens and their love story is most expected after probably Alaigal Oyvadillai.
Written by the noted contemporary Tamil / Malayalam writer Jeyamohan, Kadal is scripted and directed by Maniratnam. Jeyamohan hails from the coastal region (Nagercoil) of Tamil Nadu and hence the movie's authenticity in the portrayal of the lives of fisher folks is expected to be honest true to real life. The movie pits religious faith against the realities of nature and humanity and explores various themes along the way.
Kadal is bilingual and and a dubbed version will be released in Telugu as Kadali. AR Rahman's scores have already become superhits, thanks to the air time provided by radio stations and the stupendous sales of the CDs as soon as the songs were released. In particular, Nenjukulle, Adiye and Moongil Thottam are topping various charts and the CD sales are expected to experience a spike after the movie's release.
Kadal also has exemplar technicians to boast about. Renowned Rajiv Menon handles cinematography while editing is done by veteran editor Sreekar Prasad. Other than Gautham and Thulasi, the movie also stars Arjun, Arvind Swamy, Ponvannan and the Telugu actor Lakshmi Manchu in significant roles. Notably, Arvind Swamy is returning to the big screen after his major role in Alaipayuthey, after a little more than a decade in a Mani film.
Made at a budget of 50 crores, Kadal is produced by Madras Talkies and distributed by Gemini Film Circuit and Thirupathi Brothers. It is releasing this weekend alongside David, starring Vikram, directed by Mani's erstwhile assistant Bejoy Nambiar.
