Accesskollywood initiative sparks intense 'remake' debate!

Our readers might remember the opinion forum that had been opened on our website about the ethical correctness of remakes and inspirations in the wake of Tamil cinema increasingly getting into the habit of ‘adapting’ themes from Hollywood and other industries. Well, many of you had taken time to post your views on the forum and the response has worked well.

The exercise started by our website has now gone on and elicited responses from many quarters, even from within the industry. One of the most prominent voices to be heard was that of Moser Baer Dhananjayan who said that it was not unethical to adapt or remake films. It got unethical only when the maker of the inspired version refused to give credit to the original.

Well, there have been varied opinions on this and the debate has been all short of raging. There are schools of thought which say that there is nothing wrong in remaking films because that is the only way in which good stories can travel around the world. And, there have also been questions about the lines between inspirations and remakes, which remains a highly touchy issue with no clear answers.

It is in keeping with this that a leading English daily also ran a feature this Friday on the rights and wrongs and the ethics of remaking and adapting. Though, a conclusive opinion is yet to be arrived, the overwhelming sentiment seems to be that credit to the original is something that should not be overlooked; especially in these days when Indian audiences are increasingly exposed to global cinema.
